Competition Rules

Teams are limited to five members, all of whom must be enrolled in the school they represent at the time of the contest.

Each team must have a faculty advisor. The advisor's role is to certify that all the rules of the competition have been observed.

A team may download a free copy of CIM/Quality Lite v2.0 from this site*. The team runs the Fine Manufacturing Company [FMC] plant for a virtual year and records the stock price at the end of the year. For the purpose of this contest, the stock price at the end of the twelfth virtual month of plant operations will be the sole metric used to score performance.

Teams may rerun the FMC plant to improve scores, learning from past mistakes. To qualify as a legitimate score, the stock price must come from a run that:

  1. Was started from the operating system [not restarted within CIM/Quality]

  2. All user controllable parameters remain at the values they have when downloaded from this site and the Skill Level set at: Average Player.

The faculty advisor must submit the team's best legitimate score, identified as to school and team members, via e-mail on or before June 15, 199 [End of Competition], certifying that all competition rules have been observed.

In case of ties, the earliest posting will be decisive. It behooves teams to enter scores as early as possible. Teams can continue to enter scores as they improve their performance. The highest score entered by a team before the close of the competition will determine the team's final score.

Winners will be selected from scores received at jka@qmsprograms.com before 24:00 Zulu, June 15,1999. The competition judges' decisions will be final. Results will be published at this site June 30, 2002.

The leading schools and their scores will be posted at this site. [If a team can improve its score during the competition, the faculty advisor may submit the better score.]

* When downloading CIM/Quality Lite, please note in the "other reasons" text area the name of your school and the words "TOP TEN".

Tips & Comments

Career Hint
Even if you are able to breeze through and succeed on the first try, DO NOT tell your boss to "just download a copy". Working alone, your boss is likely to be frustrated and unhappy. Not a good situation for your boss or you. Rather, prepare a presentation and demonstrate how the Virtual Factory works, after you thoroughly understand it yourself
